難搞的美國學生

呼...
總得花上很多時間才能準備出東西來玩
好不好玩還不知道
一旦只是重複lecture的東西,用功的學生就會走人

每次上課都是一次全新的挑戰
上次ok不等於下次ok
這班ok不等於另一班ok

沒想到...教書也可以像跑新聞
一天開始一天結朿^_^

該死的駐外人員

嗯
週日大驚奇呀

原來咱們同學家裡老人家是某大學校長
遠道來芝加哥開會看女兒
同行還有些其它大頭和院士級人物
所以這兒的駐外人員就有來隨車招呼啦

不過扯得是
居然說要帶我們去一家日本料理店
但他竟然不知路在那裡怎麼形容,那家店收了也不知
最後居然叫大夥人去chinatown
哇咧...最後還裝死不去付錢,要人家校長去付錢..

原來這就是我們的外交官員
嗚呼哀哉

The Red Lion Club

呵
好店一家接著一家
咱們同學約了一攤週末夜的聚會
來到Fullerton的Red Lion pub
那裡果然是個雅痞區...
路上的PUB, 餐廳, 商店 還有 Depaul Univ.

晚上在那裡行走的感覺就像是在泡在城市文化的大湯鍋裡

傳統英國pub的感覺真的很不錯

很多好啤酒
很香的hot pie

英國菜其實沒有很多好吃的東東
但這家可還是有幾道菜做得很不錯吃

我們一群人雄雄從8點聊到快半夜
服務的waitress每十來分鐘就來招呼一次
後來咱們也在懶得分零頭的情況下
很有"社會學精神"地留下50元小費

這家在Greek town裡的店就很讚
pizza 很清新...口味適中但又香得讓你難以拒絕

beer menu 也是很amazing 洋洋灑灑幾十種....

9月17日愉快的Friday night 和咱家的officemate 再加一位學長
在那裡喝得很high 聊得很開心

雖然還只是在離學校5個block以內的距離...
但還是很有生活享受的感覺

不在距離,不在形式
而在那種分享心情的氛圍裡

power outage

奇怪了
是台灣在下雨又不是這兒在下雨...
就算是南部的颶風也打不到這來...
啊怎麼還會水管破裂把東校區的電機機房搞爛掉

不上課是好事..
但discussion section 跑掉太多人就很難上下去了
真是凡事有得必有失呀

Sep 14 2004 - >At approximately 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, a water main break flooded electrical vaults on the east campus, causing a widespread power outage. Power has been restored to many buildings but remains out in others. Classes will be held in those buildings not affected by the outage.

For Tuesday, classes in the following buildings only have been cancelled: The Lecture Centers; SEL, SEO, CCC, ERF; and Addams, Grant, Taft, Douglas, Lincoln, and Burnham halls.

The Daley Library will be closed until at least noon today, possibly longer. ......

Sep 15 2004 - This is an update on the power outage caused by a water main break on the east side of the UIC campus early Tuesday morning.

The campus expects that all buildings will be restored to normal operations by Wednesday morning, except for Lecture Centers A-F. There will be no classes in the Lecture Centers on Wednesday, Sept. 15. ........................

Sep 15 2004 -This is an update on the power outage on the east side of the UIC campus. Lecture Centers C, D and F are expected to return to normal operations effective the morning of Thursday, Sept. 16. All rooms in Lecture Centers C, D and F should be available for their regularly scheduled classes beginning Thursday morning. Lecture Centers A, B and E will remain unavailable for the rest of this week. .... The UIC Office of International Service finally rescheduled my outlet tour...in 9/12.

The good thing was ~
I got the refund so it's free tour with the YELLOW SCHOOL BUS.

The bad things was ~
the trip was only 4 hours, but I still spent a loooooooooooot of money.

Day of Music

今天原本只想去chinatown買個菜就回家唸書的
孰料...

今天居然有個一年一度的音樂盛事
就是芝加哥交響樂團的免費free公演...
而且是由他們的音樂總監巴倫波因DANIEL BARENBOIM指揮..
呵...這個樂團的響亮名聲... 可是連不聽古典音樂的我都知道^_^
既然那家 Marshall Field (A.K.A.貴的要死的高檔百貨公司)要贊助..
當然二話不說啦...寧可把正事延後then晚上少睡點覺,
無論如何也是要殺去的啦

令人讚嘆的是
走到密西根大道上完全不用擔心找不到芝加哥交響樂中心..
因為會場外可也是大排長龍繞個100多公尺等著進場...

再來就是贊助的百貨公司就是大手筆...
從下午二點到晚上十點芝加哥交響樂中心四個表演廳排滿了節目

雄雄自家賣1元多的瓶裝礦泉水...現場就是二十來個工作人員在那裡發..
同時也有工作人員在發很多質感不錯的keychian和 memo clip之類的紀念品
還有很多不明究裡的日本觀光客
看到排隊的人龍和發送礦泉水的人就衝上來"領"水 ^_^

然後就是一場二個小時..又精準又熱情的演出
果然是不負盛名...
出來時又是一長條人龍等著聽歌劇

要不是自己沒車...還真想繼續聽晚上的 Jazz orchestra..
今年是第八年..顯然這個Marshall Field's Day of Music還會繼續辦下去的吧 ^^

每個星期二都是最糟的情況

總是要等到天色大白才有可能洗把臉闔上眼
然後馬上又要上課而且帶著打結的舌頭去帶討論~
寫不完的topic 準備不完的lecture 想不出來的discussion

陪著我的只有那唯一的吃進肚子裡的唯力炸醬麵..
還有那永無止境的救護車警笛
一個人在異地果然和一個人在故鄉是不一樣的
語言還是陌生的，氣味也還是陌生的
心情也是陌生的
唯一熟悉的也已消失在清晨透涼的空氣裡

Lying on the lawn and watching the Air and Water Show, but falling asleep because of the warm sunshine and comfortable breeze.

My first TA discussion session

3 sessions 3 groups a week.

The first week of my discussion was done.
Well, it seems that I am a "talkative" and funny guy,
yes I can catch someone's eyes.

every time when I said "I am totally crazy about Matchbox 20,
and I think that Rob Thomas's voice is so sexy".
It works...^_^ every time.
So it's a good start.
hope I can make them feel great in all the sessions.

iPod..what's wrong with you

I think my iPod is cursed...
Every time I try to record the lecture at the BSB,
it was just out of order. >_<
But it works in my room...............................
I can use it ...simply plug in and bang....I can record my own voice.

Well, the alarm always went off just at a quiet and peaceful moment.....

After a two-hour sleeping, dozens of books carrying, and hours of discussion....

Would it be so nice to have another fourteen floors of stairs walking?

Sure, why not, it's awesome,
forget about that sweet dream... just get an additional exercise...
it would help you to keep fit @_@
